mikel_ | I have a problem with the grub after upgrade to devuan 3 | 01:08 |
---|---|---|
mikel_ | I find the black screen with the grub> label | 01:09 |
mikel_ | I can access the distro after performing the following commands: | 01:09 |
mikel_ | grub> set root=(hd1,gpt2) | 01:09 |
mikel_ | grub> linux /boot/vmlinuz-*********** root=/dev/sda2 | 01:09 |
mikel_ | grub> initrd /boot/initrd.img-********** | 01:09 |
mikel_ | grub> boot | 01:09 |
mikel_ | I try to install-reinstall grub (as I was able to do on other occasions) by doing: | 01:09 |
mikel_ | sudo update-grub (also tried sudo update-grub2) | 01:09 |
mikel_ | sudo grub-install /dev/sda | 01:09 |
mikel_ | But when I restart I get the grub> label again. | 01:09 |
fsmithred | mikel_ bios or uefi? gpt or msdos partition table? | 01:30 |
fsmithred | ok, I see gpt | 01:31 |
fsmithred | if uefi, are you using secure boot? Is grub package signed or unsigned? | 01:32 |
mikel_ | no, I heve unabled | 01:35 |
mikel_ | I have | 01:35 |
n4dir | german? | 01:36 |
mikel_ | I dont know what is it. I install doing sudo grub-install | 01:37 |
fsmithred | that should work for uefi | 01:37 |
fsmithred | you have a proper efi partition? | 01:38 |
fsmithred | also 'sudo update-grub' to generate a menu | 01:38 |
mikel_ | I have devuan for 4-5 years and normally works doing sudo update-grub, but not now | 01:38 |
fsmithred | which grub package do you have? | 01:39 |
fsmithred | dpkg -l | grep grub-efi | 01:39 |
mikel_ | ii grub-efi-amd64, ..amd64-bin, ..amd64-signed | 01:41 |
fsmithred | try removing grub-efi-amd64-signed and then run the grub commands again. | 01:42 |
mikel_ | an d also ii grub-eg=fi-ia32-bin | 01:42 |
fsmithred | you only need the -signed if you're using secure boot | 01:43 |
mikel_ | how can I do that? | 01:43 |
fsmithred | and I now know that you installed from the desktop-live iso | 01:43 |
fsmithred | apt remove grub-efi-amd64-signed | 01:43 |
mikel_ | ok, thanks, i try now | 01:43 |
fsmithred | you can also remove grub-efi-ia32-bin | 01:43 |
fsmithred | it's not needed unless you're running an old macbook pro | 01:44 |
mikel_ | ah, ok, I make update-grub after removing? or update-grub2? | 01:46 |
fsmithred | update-grub | 01:46 |
fsmithred | I assume they are the same thing. I have never run update-grub2 | 01:46 |
fsmithred | brb | 01:46 |
mikel_ | I reboot, but dont work yet. I open the bios and in the boot sequence section I have: devuan and \EFI\devuan\grubx64.efi | 01:49 |
mikel_ | the secure boot enable is off | 01:49 |
fsmithred | are those two different choices? | 01:52 |
fsmithred | grubx64.efi should boot if you can choose that or set it as first | 01:53 |
mikel_ | no, I have only devuan in disk | 01:53 |
fsmithred | ok, then I don't understand what you said about the boot sequence | 01:53 |
fsmithred | devuan and \EFI\devuan\grubx64.efi are two different things, or are they one thing? | 01:54 |
mikel_ | I go to delete 'devuan' option | 01:54 |
fsmithred | do you know what it is you are deleting? Because I don't know what it is. | 01:55 |
mikel_ | ok, now it works!! after doing update-grub and grub-install /dev/sda | 01:56 |
mikel_ | thanks you very very mucth for your time | 01:56 |
fsmithred | yw. | 01:56 |
fsmithred | what is at /boot/efi/EFI/ now? | 01:57 |
fsmithred | devuan or debian? | 01:57 |
mikel_ | I think one optios in boot sequence i devuan, and other os de avanced options that is in de grub menu | 01:58 |
mikel_ | I have devuan only in this laptop | 01:58 |
fsmithred | that's not what I'm asking | 01:58 |
fsmithred | ls /boot/efi/EFI | 01:58 |
fsmithred | devuan or debian? | 01:59 |
mikel_ | sure devuan, cause I have not debian installed | 01:59 |
fsmithred | yeah, ok | 01:59 |
mikel_ | thanks a lot, muchas gracias | 02:00 |
fsmithred | did you actually look in that directory, or are you just telling me that because you know what os you installed? | 02:00 |
fsmithred | and yes, I believe you know what os you installed | 02:00 |
mikel_ | I hadn't touched that section of the boot for years, so I don't know how that option came to be there | 02:02 |
fsmithred | sometimes you get a directory named debian and it will also say debian in the boot menu | 02:03 |
fsmithred | it's the grub -signed package that does it, and it only has to be like that for secure boot. | 02:04 |
mikel_ | interesting, I go write in my notes about this happend | 02:04 |
mikel_ | thanks again, good night! | 02:13 |
n4dir | i said he was a german ... good night | 02:13 |
mikel_ | jaja, not, I'm spanish | 02:13 |
fsmithred | good night | 02:14 |
n4dir | ha ha. sorry. damnit. the un-able. un is a typical german error as it is our way to negate | 02:14 |
n4dir | greetings to spain then | 02:14 |
fsmithred | there's a pretty big spanish devuan community | 02:15 |
n4dir | cool. didn't know | 02:15 |
mikel_ | ok, but now is 2 am in spain! | 02:16 |
fsmithred | there's #devuan-es | 02:16 |
fsmithred | and | 02:16 |
n4dir | same here. germany | 02:16 |
fsmithred | #devuan-mx | 02:16 |
fsmithred | I don't know how active they are | 02:17 |
n4dir | -mx is what? | 02:17 |
fsmithred | 8:15pm here and I'm not going to last long | 02:17 |
fsmithred | mexico | 02:17 |
n4dir | ah. thanks | 02:17 |
systemdlete | (different day, different problem). So my testbox's disk is weird. It was working, booting normally, until yesterday when I RE-installed beowulf (in the same partition, /dev/sda3). Strangely, I can boot from a grub prompt (grub is no longer there?). | 04:02 |
systemdlete | Background: While RE-installing beowulf, at the grub install step, it said that apparently there were no other OSs on the disk. (BS! There were/are plenty). So I aborted the grub step and went on to finish the install, figuring I'd handle this afterward. | 04:03 |
systemdlete | I don't get why it thought there were no other OS's. fdisk -l /dev/sda shows all my partitions, and as I said, I can mount several of them and I see files on them, etc. | 04:04 |
systemdlete | The disk is gpt partitioned. There is a BIOS partition, yada yada. It was all working until I re-installed beowulf. | 04:05 |
systemdlete | This is the same box that has the ASUS nvidia card. Not sure that is related or not, though I doubt it. | 04:05 |
systemdlete | ah-yah-yah. | 04:05 |
systemdlete | happy t-giving to all my American compatriots | 04:29 |
systemdlete | greetings to all others | 04:29 |
aitor_ | mikel is michael in basque | 23:28 |
