sicelowhich voip codec does N900 use by the way?00:13
siceloor, does it support G729 - that's the more correct question:)00:15
sicelommm, seems it does, https://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=588793&postcount=500:28

brolin_empeyx86 assembly language displayed while playing Unreal Tournament (1999)?07:58
brolin_empeyIt no longer matters in practice but I wonder if my Maemo 5 installation is very unresponsive because that el-v1.db (correct name?) file grew too large.  I should check the size of this file out of curiosity.08:01
brolin_empeyWow, brolin-N900 still boots from battery after sitting powered off on the shelf for months. The battery is almost empty, though.08:08
brolin_empeyYes, apparently I correctly remembered the file name of this database.08:18
brolin_empeyEh, Maemo 5 does not have a “locate” command, at least not in the path?08:21
brolin_empeyI will use find instead of locate.08:23
brolin_empeyApparently my el-v1.db file is 4 425 728 bytes long.  Is that why Maemo 5 is so unresponsive for me, even right after booting, before running anything demanding?08:33
brolin_empeyWow, running free shows how badly the N900 needs more than 256 MiB of physical memory.08:38
brolin_empeyIs it technically possible to have more than 256 MiB on the N900 motherboard, even if it requires replacing a fine-pitch BGA IC?08:40
Vajbbrolin_empey: now delete bloated el-v1 and sense the speed :p08:47
KotCzarnyi wish the history would be accessed/scanned only on request, not on app open08:47
sixwheeledbeastisn't some of that controlled with tracker?09:06
KotCzarnycontacts/sms db is different from tracker db i think09:07
sixwheeledbeastas is tracker indexing some things from el file into it's own tracker db09:08
sixwheeledbeastin09:08
sparrebrolin_empey: Right after booting, it is likely that "rtcom-messaging-ui" is eating 90-100% CPU, while scanning your message history.09:26
sparrebrolin_empey: With my 20 Mb el-v1, it takes around a minute.09:27
sparre(from memory, I didn't try to time it exactly)09:27
brolin_empeyI renamed my el-v1.db file and rebooted.  I saved a screenshot showing the output of free before renaming the file and after rebooting.  The physical memory usage seems mostly unchanged but the swap usage decreased dramatically from around 113 MB to around 5 MB.  The GUI seems much more responsive during my limited testing but I still prefer my Galaxy Note 3 despite its lack of an integrated hardware keyboard.09:45
brolin_empeyApparently one thing my N900 can do that my Galaxy Note 3 in its current configuration cannot do is use a USB↔Ethernet adapter but my N900 can do that only because I am using the power kernel with my own patch from 2013 to add the USB identifiers missing from the driver in the 2.6.28 kernel.09:51
KotCzarnywhich is basically what maemo is about09:52
KotCzarnyuser freedom09:52
brolin_empeyGranted, I rarely need Ethernet connectivity on a handheld computer but having it beats using a notebook computer for something a handheld computer can do.  I also succeeded to use my N900 as a handheld serial terminal emulator using minicom and a USB↔RS232 serial adapter.  I do not know if my Galaxy Note 3 in its current configuration can do this either but, again, the times I use this capability in practice are very few.09:58
brolin_empeyThe Android OS 4.4 from Samsung I use has the asix driver but I could not get my USB↔Ethernet adapter working.  If I spent more time on this problem, possibly including switching to an unofficial distribution of the Android OS, I may succeed but I am hesitant to use an unofficial distribution of the Android OS again after my CyanogenMod installation broke itself, which is why I use the official distribution again.10:02
brolin_empeyTheoretically I can push-start my current car because it has a manual transmission but I still relied upon a surrogate vehicle to jump-start my car the only time I had a flat battery in the four years since I got the car.10:07
brolin_empeyKotCzarny: Do your preferred Orange something (Orange Pi?) ARM Linux SBCs have ATA connectivity, in this case probably SATA?  The lack of SATA connectivity on the Raspberry Pi is limiting if you want to use an HDD or even some SSDs.10:12
KotCzarnyyou can use usb-sata (but use real one, ie jms378 and not some crap)10:12
KotCzarnyand arm on those cheapo boards are limited by data bandwidth. but at least they dont share ONE usb2.0 for everything as in rpi10:13
KotCzarnyso you can get 3x40MB/s without a problem10:13
KotCzarnybut if you want real speed use rk3399/pro or if you are real about data throughput, choose marvell10:14
brolin_empeyKotCzarny: Then the answer seems to be no.  Some ARM Linux SBCs, such as the Nitrogen models from Boundary Devices, have an integrated SATA host controller, presumably natively connected instead of using a USB↔SATA converter/bridge.10:16
KotCzarnyif you dont mind 2 cores instead of 4 you can use A20 based one10:17
KotCzarnythey have native sata port10:17
KotCzarnyfind yourself sbc with minipcie slot, then add minipci-2/4sata10:18
KotCzarnyit's the best solution than trying to find one having it native10:19

{-0-}Hi all! USB socket repair... trawling through the big thread on the forum but it seems a lot of the pictures are missing. Am I correct in thinking that the 5 tiny pads at the back and the 4 medium pads round the outside are all soldered but the 2 big squares underneath are glued?15:23
{-0-}Thankfully the pads are all present15:23
{-0-}sorry, guess I should mention ... N90015:24
siceloiirc, originally only the 5 tiny ones are soldered15:37
sicelobut you probably should solder everything :-)15:38
{-0-}Thank you! It does look as was originally attached with just hope and crossed fingers :D Upside being there's no damage to the board15:45
sixwheeledbeast~usbfix16:55
infobotit has been said that usbfix is http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=75920 - and **NEVER** use epoxy (unless you want to seal your device for underwater), or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYz5nIHH0iY#t=1866, you will basically need two irons: a small good one (or better hot-air reflow) and a 60+ Watt, or to avoid breakage, see ~usb-unplug16:55
{-0-}sixwheeledbeast: thank you!18:49
sixwheeledbeastnp18:49
{-0-}~usb-unplug18:49
infoboti guess usb-unplug is http://maemo.cloud-7.de/share-service/20140721_002.mp418:49
sixwheeledbeastI believe that is the "correct" way to unplug your usb to avoid damage18:53
{-0-}I got it at a carboot with broken USB, no obvious damage to the casing so I don't know if it's a wear and tear breakage or an oops breakage18:58
{-0-}And the screen was in better condition than my existing N900, so that's been swapped18:59
KotCzarnyusb usually dies because of user19:11
KotCzarnyand overall engineering brain fart19:12
KotCzarnyif it's treated right during whole life, it survives (in mine it's ok since 2009)19:12
KotCzarnyif user doesnt care and 'just pushes and wiggles', bam19:12
sixwheeledbeastI can second that, my one I have had the longest (2009) has never missed a beat. Other I have picked up since have occasional intermittent issue.19:18
KotCzarnyone tricky thing is using other peoples chargers/cables19:23
KotCzarnythey are often stiff enough to abuse the port19:23
sixwheeledbeastI try and use my Nokia wallcharger with locking pins smoothed off a bit where ever possible.19:31
KotCzarnymine are greatly tore off of the use19:31
KotCzarnymight be wrong word19:31
KotCzarnyworn is better19:31
KotCzarnyso in unlikely case charger dies (but its nokia, so unlikely), i can reuse the cable19:32
sixwheeledbeastThe only charger that i use that is not Nokia is a unbranded cigarette socket one. I use that very rarely if I have hit red battery19:34
{-0-}one USB cable filed down and marked as the safe lead!19:53
KotCzarnyo.O19:53
{-0-}amazing to watch that guy soldering when it's all zoomed in!19:57
