rwpspine-o-saurus, Missing the ext4 option?  Did you start the expert install but not load the needed modules?  Restart and use the normal install path and all will be there.  I recommend xfs.00:01
spine-o-saurusalrightythen00:05
rwpI dislike UEFI because in the previous days with Legacy BIOS booting one could move disks from one machine into a different machine and then boot.00:05
rwpBut with UEFI this is no longer possible because the new motherboard won't have the EFI vars set up for it.  One must always boot rescue media and then grub-install or efibootmgr or something else that writes the EFI vars to instruct it to boot the disk.  Even if the motherboards are otherwise identical.00:06
blockheadnwp: i didn't know that.  ick.00:21
rwpIck indeed.  Meanwhile all new hardware either has already moved or is moving to UEFI and so we must learn how to live with it.00:35
spine-o-saurusya i remember they did the same during the x86 to x64 changeover too, they claimed it was more secure and faster00:47
blockheadi went into setup on my laptop and told it MBR & BIOS.  Working fine.00:49

cousin_luigiMorning.09:41
cousin_luigiWhere is the shutdown log located? I see things on console that don't appear to be saved anywhere.09:41
gnarfacewell, it'd be in /var/log/10:07
gnarfaceyou might have to change something to log what you want logged10:07
gnarfacersyslog configuration or something10:08
gnarfacedid you install bootlogd?10:08
gnarfacenot sure but bootlogd might help too10:09
onefangAlways possible that not everything gets logged.10:11
gnarfacei think there's two basic cases of stuff you see on the console not being logged, and one you can fix by installing another package and the other you fix by changing a line in rsyslog.conf10:11
cousin_luigignarface: Yes, bootlogd is running and I've grepped through /var/log without success10:26
cousin_luigiWhat should I add to rsyslog.conf?10:26
gnarfacecousin_luigi: sorry, i forget, but it might be mentioned in the comments10:42
gnarfacei think it is also possible some stuff early in boot or late in shutdown only can be logged via serial console10:42
onefangCan't log to disk if the disk is not yet mounted, or has been unmounted.11:02
librebeowulfhi guys. when you click on removable drive in thunar, what program runs? I was thinking it's not mount because mount requires root even to mount CD?12:28
librebeowulfthe reason I'm asking is I would like to something in autostart so I don't have to click anymore. do I have wrong idea?12:31
n4dirwhat device do you want to mount? If that is what you want to do12:32
librebeowulfflash drive12:32
n4dirto make it short: you could ... yes, after flash drive, give "pmount" a try12:32
librebeowulfcan I use uuid?12:33
n4dirin thunar dependencies there is thunar-volman, but i don't think it answers the question12:33
n4dirlibrebeowulf: i don't really know, but i don't think so12:33
n4diri don't know it well12:33
n4dirlibrebeowulf: there is an entry in xfce-gui-settings where you can automount stuff12:34
n4dirall settings -> removable drives and media -> storage12:34
librebeowulfok thanks. which brings me to another question. I use openbox more often. When I try to mount internal drive, it doesn't ask for password. It just says mount failed or something.12:36
librebeowulfwhat's mising.12:36
n4diralso via thunar click-click ?12:37
librebeowulfyes12:37
n4diri sure don't know. if you search the web, you may find stuff (say i ran in dbus-launch)12:39
n4diryou could to a "pstree" right after xfce started, then look at what makes sense12:40
n4dirtruth to be told: if it was me i would just mount devices from the terminal12:40
n4diror just wait, many xfce users around12:40
librebeowulfok thanks12:41
n4dirusually if i need what xfce "just works", i exit fluxbox, fire up xfce and do it from there. Doesn't help you at all, just explaining why i don't really know the details.12:43
buZzn4dir: what doesnt work in fluxbox vs xfce?12:45
n4dirbuZz: i do it so seldom, i don't even remember. For sure i had problems "mounting" the smartphone12:45
buZzah12:45
n4diralso i think something with "synaptic"12:46
n4dirto put it different: running a gui apps which needs root rights12:47
eponyHappy Christ Nativity!12:47
librebeowulfright i almost forgot, merry Christmas  .。❅*⋆⍋*∞*。*∞*⍋⋆*❅。.12:56
eponyparty begins now ;-)13:01
librebeowulfpmount doesn't work with exfat :(13:09
cousin_luigiWhy isn't /var/log/boot a text file?16:35
debdogwhat do you expect from a log file made by bootlogd?16:43
cousin_luigidebdog: What tool am I supposed to use on it?17:04
debdogcousin_luigi: no clue, I don't even have that file. but the bootlogd package has a file /usr/bin/readbootlog17:06
debdoghttps://packages.debian.org/bookworm/amd64/bootlogd/filelist17:06
movedMacBookhey dev1 folks, merry christmas, advance happy new year and happy holidays... thanks for the awesome safeguarding init freedom17:11
movedMacBookthanks to fsmithred and few folks here who helped me hop on to dev1... as i was playing around DEs and got comfy with one, i thought i'll do a final minimal reinstall of packages with netinstall this time rather than full big desktop image of size 4 GB .. i think i see a major difference in expert install mode on desktop image vs the expert install17:20
movedMacBookmode of netinstall... the disk partioner in netinstall does not allow me to chose ext4 or xfs partition type in my disks but the partitioner in the desktop image allowed me to do so ..17:20
buZzmovedMacBook: maybe because they initially had no partitions?17:22
buZzit wont allow you to reformat partitions you plan to use 'as is'17:22
movedMacBooki am not sure if it is intended.. just wanted to report this. coz as i thought this is for experienced users and as i already chose the expert install mode in the desktop image during my previous dev1 installation17:22
buZzyou'd have to delete the partitions first17:22
debdogcousin_luigi: cannot find an alternative to bootlogd right now. some sites mention /var/log/boot.log but no clue what prog or service writes that file.17:22
movedMacBooki deleted the partitions and then created the partitions...17:22
buZzah, ok17:22
movedMacBookthen i trued to choose the boot flags and then setup mount points as i did earlier..17:23
movedMacBookthose options just doesnt show..17:23
buZzso you ment , the debian textmode installer behaves differently from the x11 gui installer from refracta?17:23
movedMacBooknope..17:23
buZzthey are both the x11 gui one?17:23
movedMacBooki always did debian textmode installer17:23
buZzoh ok17:23
buZzbizar then, there shouldnt be a difference i think17:23
movedMacBookalways did expert installtion mode from the 4 GB desktop image...17:23
buZzmaybe it requires the xfs stuff to be preinstalled on the image you're installing from17:24
movedMacBookbut this time i chose netinstall image17:24
buZzand the netinstall doesnt?17:24
movedMacBookyes...17:24
buZzthat would explain it then :)17:24
movedMacBookseems to be..17:24
movedMacBookmay be its on desktop-live image17:24
movedMacBookas well..17:24
buZzcould be, yeah17:25
movedMacBookand these are on the stable images and not weekly builds as i wanted to test them a bit..17:26
movedMacBookabout 2 years or so i did a netinstall of debian... i remember being able to chose most diff partition types there... not sure why isnt is there in dev1 though17:27
debdogyou missed loading some module17:28
movedMacBookwas it addresssed to me debdog?17:29
debdogyes movedMacBook. we got several people mention that problem lately17:31
movedMacBookhmm.. seems like you addressed me.. even if reboot the machine and to reload all files and packages from the USB.. even then i just get ext2, fat16,32 and swap in the disk partitioner17:31
movedMacBookinteresting..17:31
movedMacBookso that seems like a bug rather than a usual workflow..17:32
debdoglast night: <spine-o-saurus> oh ya i missed the install step to load modules  <-- movedMacBook17:32
movedMacBooklet me reboot to see if the installer loads all necessary packages from the netinstall USB17:32
fsmithredcheck sha256sum to make sure the file downloaded correctly17:33
movedMacBookooh.. yeah there is such a step17:33
fsmithrednetinstall has same installer as the desktop dvd17:33
fsmithredall the installer isos17:33
movedMacBookhow stupid of me..17:34
fsmithredbtw, regular install and expert install give the exact same partitioner17:34
movedMacBooki thought there needs to be reboot... but i after setting up language i just jumped into disk partionion17:34
fsmithredyou can do manual partitioning with either17:34
fsmithredoh17:35
fsmithredafk17:35
movedMacBookso i loaded the modules - and all else works well - so silly of me being the expert installer after installing about 3 times via desktop image17:37
cousin_luigidebdog: That wasn't my question.17:51
cousin_luigioh17:51
cousin_luigidebdog: Yes, it works. I'm just not sure about the choice itself.17:52
debdogyes, that's why I was looking for an alternative, cousin_luigi17:53
cousin_luigidebdog: I mean, why does it have to produce a non-text file?18:24
rwpcousin_luigi, /var/log/boot is not a text file because (insert swearing and cussing here) people want color escape codes everywhere including the console!  You can pass the -R option to less and view it.  "less -R /var/log/boot".  Without -R less will still work but will display the raw characters using caret notation.18:26
rwpIn other words, the console log is a log of what went to the console, and what goes to the console is not just text but also escape sequences for terminal positioning with curses and also changing colors and that all gets logged and those are not text.18:29
cousin_luigiI see18:29
cousin_luigiApparently my troubles with interfaces at shutdown are triggered by the bridge script. But they might originate from badly formed interface definitions.18:30
cousin_luigiI got most of it out of a serial log.18:30
