mobius_ | Did I do this right, am I in the chat/ | 03:14 |

mobius_ | Oops... ? | 03:14 |
mobius_ | It would appear so. Great first impression lol | 03:15 |
mobius_ | So I sent an email the other day to freedom (at) devuan and the person who replied invited me over here. I'd like to help if at all possible. Right now my skills are minimal, but I'm willing to learn and want to learn programming. | 03:17 |
mobius_ | Obviously I don't expect anyone here to teach me programming. I've found some great resources to start, just to maybe clarify that lol | 03:20 |
Xenguy | mobius_, There is some writeup (in the forum?) that offers suggestions on how to help the project | 03:39 |
Xenguy | https://dev1galaxy.org/viewtopic.php?id=589 | 03:42 |
Xenguy | as linked from this page: https://www.devuan.org/os/community.html | 03:43 |
mobius_ | Hi there, Xenguy. Thanks. I have read that before. I'm really interested in possibly adding a few packages, maybe something like Lagrange, which is a gemini client that isn't in the repositories. I've never made a .deb package before, and there's a ton of free online resources to get me started. And I'm also interested in one day possibly heavier developer type stuff. So idk, I was wondering if someone might be willing to tak | 03:48 |
mobius_ | e me under their wing so to speak for a few weeks and maybe teach me about building packages | 03:48 |
mobius_ | Like I said though, the response to the email said to drop in over here and kind of introduce myself | 03:50 |
mobius_ | If anyone needs anything specific, I'd be happy to try my very best to learn and help | 03:50 |
Xenguy | Sounds good mobius_ , I don't do packaging myself but feel free to idle in the channel and I'm sure someone who has some experience with packaging will see your interest... | 03:54 |
Xenguy | Bear in mind also that the team is working to get out a new release right now, so that is the priority in the short term. After that, things will settle down a bit. | 03:55 |
mobius_ | Okay cool, I really appreciate it xenguy. I can def understand that. I'm actually running daedalus right now, but I imagine with the new bookworm release that's the priority | 03:57 |
Xenguy | Yep : -) | 03:58 |
Xenguy | Thanks again for your interest | 03:59 |
mobius_ | For sure! Debian was the very first linux distro I ever tried (from my raspberry pi). Eventually I found out about init systems and systemd, etc., etc., and ran Gentoo and Void for a long time, and also Openbsd. But then found out about Devuan and how it's (in my opinion) the "original" Debian, so I've settled on this. I'm way past my distro hopping days and am trying to learn sysadmin and C programming. Just a bit of backgro | 04:02 |
mobius_ | und for what it might be worth | 04:02 |
golinux | mobius_: Greetings! | 04:11 |
golinux | Devuan's mission is Debian without systemd. | 04:13 |
golinux | That requires forking of "tainted" debian packages | 04:13 |
golinux | We rarely add packages outside of this purpose. Of course you are welcome to put your own projects in our git and users may find and use them.them | 04:15 |
golinux | BTW . . . I think that gemini is a really cool project . . . | 04:16 |
mobius_ | Thanks, golinux! I guess I should have elaborated more when I said I "found out about init systems and systemd". I do appreciate that, but just so you know, I do know Devuan's mission is Debian without systemd. I've read everything on the Devuan website, including the original email thread about forking Debian when systemd was forced. I've been systemd-free now for like two years, something like that. I made the "mistake" of | 04:29 |
mobius_ | installing Gentoo as my first systemd-free distribution. It really taught me a lot about the guts of Unix and my system. And I agree, gemini is awesome! I've found some really cool "capsules" as they're called. It's not quite gopher, but it's not the web either, which is flooded with javascript (queue richard stallman). That's why I like it. | 04:29 |
mobius_ | Btw, I know this is the dev channel and not general discussion. So I guess once general intros are out of the way, I know to use this channel for only those topics | 04:35 |
golinux | Please take note that tito has updated his Debian to Devuan migration script: | 19:59 |

golinux | Hopefully some on this list will test and provide feedback. | 20:00 |
sachy | golinux: tested with MATE desktop, all good | 20:48 |
golinux | Thanks! | 20:59 |
mason | I just re-signed up for some lists, and I got a message that I was already signed up for devuan-announce@. Haven't seen anything on it for a while so I went to look at the archives, and: https://mailinglists.dyne.org/pipermail/devuan-announce/ | 23:55 |
mason | URL not found. Just mentioning it in case it wasn't already known. | 23:55 |
