Eventually I found out about init systems and systemd, etc., etc., and ran Gentoo and Void for a long time, and also Openbsd. But then found out about Devuan and how it's (in my opinion) the "original" Debian, so I've settled on this. I'm way past my distro hopping days and am trying to learn sysadmin and C programming. I've read everything on the Devuan website, including the original email thread about forking Debian when systemd was forced. I've been systemd-free now for like two years, something like that. I've found some really cool "capsules" as they're called. It's not quite gopher, but it's not the web either, which is flooded with javascript (queue richard stallman).
